CSWGS is pleased to honor Allison Stocks '24 with the 2024 Merfish Award. She founded the Planned Parenthood Generation Action Chapter at Rice University (PPgen@Rice) in 2021, and grew it to over 200 members. In summer 2022, after the Dobbs decision ended abortion as a constitutional right for all in the U.S., she recruited individuals to serve as PPgen liaisons to their undergraduate residential college and graduate student communities, to support any student in need with free and confidential information and resources including emergency contraception pills (Plan B), pregnancy tests, condoms, lube, dental dams, and information on birth control options, STI risks and testing, LGBT+ health, gynecological visits, consent, safe sexual practices, and male health. PPgen has hosted educational/awareness events on campus and referred students to existing on-campus and off-campus resources for pregnancy prevention and STI screening. Allison raised funds and organized supply and distribution during a scary and uncertain time for reproductive rights in Texas and the US. Allison was also a member of the Vending Machine Committee under Rice’s Reproductive Rights Task Force / Reproductive Health Working Group. This committee was the driving force behind the on-campus vending machines installed in 2023 to make available low-cost emergency contraception pills, pregnancy tests, and other reproductive health resources. Allison also lobbied at the Texas State Legislature for reproductive access and freedoms, and helped organize Rice student participation in Houston protests for reproductive freedom and voter registration efforts. She is pictured here with CSWGS Director Lora Wildenthal and Sherry Merfish.
