The Core Faculty are those with demonstrated research and/or teaching interests in SWGS and with an especially close commitment to the Center. Core faculty fall into two categories: Permanent Core Faculty are those whose contract stipulates that a portion of their teaching time is reserved for CSWGS, and Term Core Faculty are those who serve for renewable three-year terms (see details below).
Those wishing to be Term Core Faculty must apply to the Steering Committee. As active members of the Steering Committee, Term Core Faculty are involved centrally in the work in the Center. They are encouraged to teach one cross-listed course and/or to teach a core (undergraduate or graduate) course in the three-year term-core period. They have the opportunity and are encouraged to be SWGS and/or departmental advisors for honors students who come to them with a suitable thesis. Term Core Faculty will, in conjunction with the Director, produce a letter of commitment outlining that faculty member's teaching and service commitments to CSWGS during the course of her term as a Core Faculty member. This letter will be signed by the CSWGS Director and by the faculty member’s department chair. In formalizing the institutional status of individual faculty members within CSWGS, the Core Faculty agreement letter serves two purposes: 1) to enable the staffing of core courses in CSWGS, and 2) to clarify for home departments the specific terms through which individual faculty members may be released from teaching obligations within those departments.
