Research Clusters and Projects

RESEARCH

One of the principal aims of the Center is to foster faculty and student research by providing opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration.  The Feminist Research Group has provided faculty and graduate students a critical venue for reflection since 1987.  The Sexuality Studies Working Group was established in 2006.  The Center’s research concentrates on four broad research clusters:

  • Sex, Race, and Nation
  • Women and Global Poverty
  • Gender and Urban Life
  • Gender, Health, and Human Well-being

THE POLITICS OF VULNERABILITY: SUBJECTS, BODIES, COMMUNITIES

As part of its research mission, the Center brings together local, national, and international scholars and public intellectuals whose work addresses a broad topic of compelling interest. In 2009-2010, the Center’s research series will focus on "The Politics of Vulnerability: Subjects, Bodies, and Communities.” This year-long series of lectures, panel presentations, workshops, and seminars addresses the wide range of meanings and values attached to the concept of “vulnerability,” especially as it features in analyses of gender and sexuality.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Building relationships with local and wide-ranging communities is a defining feature of the Center’s academic programs and community outreach initiatives.  In core undergraduate courses students are introduced to engaged research through guest lectures from community leaders, interviews with people who have made contributions to Houston, and on-campus projects.  The Seminar and Practicum place undergraduates in research-based partnerships with Houston area non-profit organizations, and the PJHC minor offers students summer experiential learning internships across the US and internationally.

The Center is a founding member of Houston ARCH, a consortium that works for the preservation of Houston's LGBT history.

Reaching beyond the geographic boundaries of Texas and the United States, the Center also hosts the QStudy Listserv, an international forum for academic discussions pertaining to queer theory, an umbrella term encompassing lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual/transgender studies.
