 CSWGS Greets New Academic Year

 2011 Opening Reception

On September 7th, a crowd of the Center’s faculty, students, and friends gathered in the Rice Gallery Lobby to celebrate the start of another year of academic and community work in the field of women, gender, and sexuality. The event drew many familiar faces—CSWGS was pleased to have the good company of many guests, including those pictured above: Stephen Klineberg, President Leebron, Associate Provost Roland Smith, Dean Shumway, and Rice Theatre Program Director Christina Keefe, with Elora Shehabuddin. Several undergraduate majors and graduate certificate students attended the reception and were overheard discussing summer research (and summer vacations!). Once the reception was well underway and guests had a chance to enjoy the delicious spinach empanadas,  Elora Shehabuddin introduced herself as the Center’s interim director while Rosemary Hennessy is on sabbatical and thanked Christine Medina for her years of service as the Center's Program Manager for the Minor in Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities, wishing her continued success as she transitions to her new role as Rice Gallery Manager. Shehabuddin also introduced some of the Center’s upcoming events for the fall, including two new  Gray/Wawro Lectures : Sandra Steingraber’s lecture, “Fracking is Feminist Issue,” which debuted to over 100 guests September 22nd, and  Ruth Wilson Gilmore’s upcoming  "Gender Responsive Prisons: Or, the Dangers of Innocence."You can also read more about the Center’s events this semester, including Terri Kapsalis’ recent lecture, "Jane Addams’ Travel Medicine Kit." Many thanks to Center Coordinator Angela Wren Wall and Assistant Director Brian Riedel for putting the event together.
